The Personal Project: A Capstone Challenge
The MYP Personal Project is a self-directed project based on your personal interests.
It requires careful planning, sustained work, evidence of your process, and meaningful reflection.
The project is assessed across three criteria:
- Criterion A – Planning
- Criterion B – Applying Skills
- Criterion C – Reflecting
Each criterion carries a maximum of 8 points, giving a total of 24 points.
The final achievement level is reported on the IB’s 1–7 scale.
Yet many students struggle with the same areas:
- Choosing a project that is realistic and focused
- Creating measurable Success Criteria
- Separating the Learning Goal from the Product Goal
- Understanding the Global Context
- Showing how ATL skills were actually used
- Keeping useful evidence in the Process Journal
- Evaluating results instead of simply describing them
- Understanding what the assessment criteria are asking for
Our tutors help you work through these challenges step by step.

Our MYP Personal Project Tutor offers
Your tutor can support you throughout the Personal Project.
Ideation & Global Context
Not every interesting idea makes a good Personal Project.
Your tutor can help you explore your interests, narrow your topic, select an appropriate Global Context, and develop a clear direction for your project.
Goal Setting
Understand the difference between:
- Learning Goal – What you want to learn or understand.
- Product Goal – What you intend to create or accomplish.
Your tutor can also help you develop measurable Success Criteria for your product.
Action Planning
Turn your idea into a realistic plan.
Your tutor can help you break the project into manageable tasks, establish deadlines, and create an Action Plan that connects your activities to your Success Criteria.
Applying ATL Skills
Don’t simply list ATL skills. Show how you actually used them.
Your tutor can help you identify the important skills used during your project and understand how to provide meaningful evidence of their application.
Process Journal
Your Process Journal should show how your project developed.
You can document:
- Important decisions
- Research
- Changes to your plan
- Problems and solutions
- Feedback
- Product development
- ATL skills
- Relevant evidence
Your tutor can help you make your documentation more useful and organized.
Report Writing
Your final report needs to communicate your work clearly.
Your tutor can help you understand how to organize your report, connect evidence to the assessment criteria, and use IB command terms appropriately.
Reflection & Evaluation
Reflection is more than explaining what happened.
You need to evaluate your project and consider what worked, what did not, and what you learned.
Your tutor can help you move from simple description towards stronger analysis and evaluation.
Understand the MYP Personal Project Assessment Criteria
Criterion A – Planning
Focus areas include:
- Learning and Product Goals
- Global Context
- Success Criteria
- Action Plan
- Planning decisions
The goal is to create a clear and realistic blueprint for your project.
Criterion B – Applying Skills
This criterion assesses how you applied ATL skills in completing your project.
Simply saying “I used research skills” is not enough.
You need to show how the skills were used and provide relevant evidence.
Criterion C – Reflecting
This is where you evaluate your project and reflect on your learning.
Strong reflection goes beyond describing your experience.
You should consider your results, evaluate your Success Criteria, discuss challenges, and explain how you developed through the project.
Level 7 Strategy of our MYP Personal Project Tutor
A bigger project does not automatically mean a better project.
A simple, finished, well-evaluated project can be stronger than an ambitious, unfinished one.
1. Keep Your Project Focused
Choose something realistic.
A smaller project with clear, measurable goals is easier to complete and evaluate properly.
2. Treat Your Process Journal Seriously
Document your journey as you work.
Record important decisions, changes, evidence, feedback, and challenges instead of trying to remember everything at the end.
3. Make Your Evidence Easy to Follow
Your examiner should be able to understand what you did and find the evidence supporting your claims.
Clear organization matters.
4. Analyze. Don’t Just Describe.
Don’t stop at explaining what you did.
Ask:
- What happened?
- Why did it happen?
- What did I learn?
- What would I change?
This is where meaningful reflection begins.
From Your First Idea to Your Final Report
Explore your interests and develop a focused project idea.
Set your Learning Goal, Product Goal, Success Criteria and Action Plan.
Work on your product while documenting important decisions and changes.
Keep useful evidence of your research, ATL skills, challenges and development.
Review your Success Criteria and analyse the results.
Bring your planning, evidence, skills and reflection together in a clear final report.
